Introduction
This image displays two toy minifigures representing Vietnamese soldiers from the Vietnam War era (circa 1960s-1970s). Each figure is shown in a different uniform.
- North Vietnamese Army (NVA) Soldier (Left): This figure represents a standard infantryman of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA), also known as the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN). He is dressed in the iconic olive-green uniform. His headwear is the classic olive-green pith helmet (mũ cối), which features a gold star emblem on the front. This lightweight helmet was not for ballistic protection but was ideal for the hot, tropical climate. Over his tunic, he wears a canvas “Chicom” chest rig, which was designed to carry ammunition magazines for the AK-47 assault rifle. This figure represents the disciplined, conventional force of North Vietnam.
- Viet Cong (VC) or NVA Sapper (Right): This figure represents a Vietnamese guerrilla fighter, likely from the Viet Cong (VC), or a sapper from an NVA special unit. He is wearing a “leaf” pattern camouflage uniform, which was used by various units for better concealment in the dense jungle. His helmet is covered with a camouflage net. He is also equipped with a chest rig and webbing to carry his equipment. The figure’s distressed and scarred face suggests he is a veteran of intense, close-quarters combat. The VC, as a guerrilla force, were known for their effective use of camouflage and ambush tactics.
