The Figure: WWI Russian Imperial Infantryman (Ryadovoy)

This toy minifigure represents a battle-hardened Enlisted Soldier of the Russian Imperial Army during World War I. He is depicted in the typical marching gear of the “Russian Steamroller” on the Eastern Front (1914–1917).

  • Distinctive Gear (The Skatka): The most iconic feature of this figure is the Grey Rolled Greatcoat (Skatka) worn diagonally across his chest (from his left shoulder to his right hip).

    • Historical Context: Russian soldiers were famous for wearing their heavy wool overcoats rolled up in this horseshoe shape when not in use. It acted as makeshift armor against saber slashes and shrapnel, and served as their bedding in the trenches.

  • Headgear: He wears a dark M1915 Adrian Helmet. Like the officer figure, this indicates he is fighting in the later stages of the war (1916 onwards) or serves in the Russian Expeditionary Force in France, where these French-supplied helmets were standard issue.

  • Uniform: He wears the standard Khaki “Gymnastirka” Tunic.

    • Belt Buckle: A detailed gold Imperial Eagle Belt Buckle is printed on his waist, a symbol of his allegiance to the Tsar.

  • Accessory (Trench Life): In his right hand, he holds a transparent printed tile depicting a Brown Rat.

    • Historical Detail: This accessory represents the brutal reality of Trench Warfare. Rats were a constant plague in the trenches of WWI, growing to massive sizes by feeding on refuse and corpses. Including this accessory highlights the harsh living conditions soldiers endured.

  • Face: The face print features a Scar on the Cheek and a weary expression, suggesting a veteran who has survived close-quarters combat.

Historical Background: The Russian Imperial infantryman was known for his incredible endurance and ability to march long distances with heavy loads. The “Skatka” roll is the defining silhouette of the Russian soldier in WWI art and photography. Despite suffering from severe shortages of rifles and ammunition, the Russian infantry tied down huge numbers of German and Austro-Hungarian troops on the Eastern Front, sacrificing millions of men to support their Western allies.
