Character Identification: WWII Royal Hungarian Military Police (Csendőr)

This custom building block minifigure specifically represents a Military Policeman or Field Gendarme of the Royal Hungarian Army (Magyar Királyi Honvédség) during World War II. In Hungarian, these highly authoritative law enforcement troops were known as the Csendőrség (Gendarmerie), and when attached to the army, they formed the Tábori Csendőrség (Field Military Police).

Uniform and Equipment Details

  • The Duty Gorget (Chest Plate): This is the single most important defining feature of this figure. Resting on his chest is a printed white metal crescent plate, historically known as a gorget. If you look closely at the printing, it clearly bears the word “CSENDÖR” (Hungarian for “Gendarme”) beneath a stylized crest (likely the Turul bird or royal crest). This metal plate was the universal symbol of military police authority, worn while on active patrol or traffic duty.

  • The Uniform: He is dressed in the standard Hungarian light khaki/brown M43 field tunic and matching trousers, which was the typical uniform for Hungarian forces in the later stages of the war.

  • Collar Tabs: The tunic features red collar tabs with white stars. The stars denote his rank as a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO).

  • The Helmet: The figure wears an olive-green steel helmet, representing the historically accurate Hungarian M38 Sisak. This helmet looks similar to the German Stahlhelm but had a slightly different shape and rivet placement.

  • Combat Gear: Instead of heavy infantry webbing, his gear is stripped down for police duty. He wears a simple brown leather waist belt with a small black utility or ammunition pouch on his right hip. His lower legs feature detailed printing representing rugged brown leather field boots.

Historical Background

During World War II, the Kingdom of Hungary fought as an Axis power, primarily enduring brutal combat on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union. As the massive armies moved across vast territories, maintaining logistics, traffic, and strict discipline was absolutely critical.

The Tábori Csendőrség (Field Gendarmerie) were drawn from the elite national police force and attached directly to military divisions. When a soldier saw a man wearing the “CSENDÖR” gorget, they knew he carried absolute authority. These military policemen were responsible for directing the chaotic flow of tanks and infantry, guarding bridges and vital supply depots, processing prisoners of war, and arresting deserters. Because they had the power to discipline even higher-ranking frontline combat troops, the Csendőr were highly respected and heavily feared within the Hungarian ranks.
