Introduction
the picture displays a complete set of four custom building block minifigures representing the late Imperial Chinese military during its transitional period. Here is the detailed introduction for each character from left to right.
The first figure on the far left represents a Qing Dynasty New Army Soldier. He is dressed in a modernized dark blue military tunic with a standing collar, equipped with modern ammunition pouches on his belt, and features white Chinese characters printed directly on his chest to identify his regiment. Despite the modern uniform and his modern bolt-action rifle, he wears the traditional black Qing soldier’s hat with an upturned brim. Historically, this represents the Beiyang Army’s late 19th-century modernization efforts, adopting Western-style drilling and weapons while still being strictly required by the imperial court to maintain traditional imperial dress codes to show absolute loyalty to the emperor.
The second figure from the left represents a Qing Dynasty Infantry Soldier. He wears a traditional dark blue military tunic featuring printed black frog fasteners and prominent red Chinese characters that served to visibly identify his specific regional army and battalion. He also wears the traditional black Qing hat and carries a modern bolt-action rifle. Historically, this figure shows the complex transitional phase where regular infantrymen were equipped with cutting-edge imported firearms but still wore deeply traditional garments, perfectly embodying an era where ancient traditions clashed directly with the necessity of modern warfare.
The third figure from the left, standing slightly in front, represents a Qing Dynasty Old-Firearms Rifleman. He is instantly recognizable by his brightly colored pink traditional military tunic and the prominent brown ammunition bandolier wrapped across his waist. He has a printed rugged stubble beard, wears the traditional black Qing hat, and is uniquely armed with a highly detailed lever-action repeating rifle. Historically, as the Qing court desperately upgraded its forces, they purchased massive amounts of Western firearms. Soldiers were handed devastating rapid-fire weapons like the American lever-action rifle, yet were still mandated to wear these bright, outdated imperial tunics, highlighting the chaotic and desperate modernization of the era.
The fourth figure on the far right represents a Qing Dynasty Cavalry Battalion NCO. He is dressed in a transitional khaki field uniform that still retains traditional Chinese frog fasteners, flanked by black Chinese characters for unit identification. Instead of a traditional mandarin hat, he wears a highly practical khaki wide-brimmed sun hat and is equipped with a modern bolt-action rifle. Historically, this represents the final stage of Qing military modernization just before the dynasty’s collapse in 1911. Troops finally abandoned bright colors to adopt practical khaki uniforms for better field camouflage, yet the retention of stamped chest characters and traditional button knots illustrates a fascinating bridge between two distinct eras of warfare.
