This image displays a toy minifigure representing a Late-War German Machine Gunner from World War II, specifically outfitted in the rare Leibermuster Camouflage uniform.

The figure is depicted wearing a uniform that represents the very final and most desperate stages of the war (1945).

The Uniform (Leibermuster): The defining feature of this figure is the M45 Leibermuster camouflage pattern printed on the helmet cover, tunic, and trousers. This pattern is easily recognized by its irregular black “carbon” spots printed over splashes of tan, green, and brown. Unlike previous patterns which were specific to either the Army (Wehrmacht) or the Waffen-SS, Leibermuster was intended to standardize camouflage across all branches of the German military.

The Weapon (MG42): The figure is armed with the MG42 Machine Gun (Maschinengewehr 42). Known as “Hitler’s Buzzsaw” due to its terrifying rate of fire (1,200 rounds per minute), this was the most feared infantry weapon on the battlefield. The toy depicts the weapon with its bipod folded.

Combat Gear:

  • Ammo Belts: The figure has Machine Gun Ammunition Belts draped around his neck and chest. This was a common way for gunners to carry extra ammunition for immediate use during an assault.

  • Sidearm: A black Pistol Holster is printed on his belt. Machine gunners were always issued a pistol (usually a P38 or Luger) for self-defense because the MG42 was too heavy to use in hand-to-hand combat.

  • Field Cap: The set includes a separate Grey M43 Field Cap (Einheitsfeldmütze) accessory, featuring the eagle and skull insignia.

Historical Background: The Leibermuster (M45) pattern is historically significant because it was the first camouflage designed specifically to defeat Infrared Night Vision devices. The black dye used in the pattern was made with special carbon compounds that absorbed infrared light, helping soldiers hide from the early night-vision scopes being used by Allied snipers in 1945. Because it was introduced so late in the war (early 1945), it saw very limited combat service, mostly on the Eastern Front (specifically in Czechoslovakia) and during the final defense of Germany. This figure represents a veteran gunner fighting in the final months of the Third Reich.
