Character Identification: WWII German Waffen-SS Assault Infantryman (StG 44 Gunner)
This custom building block minifigure represents a specialized frontline combat soldier from the Waffen-SS during the late stages of World War II (primarily 1944–1945). Based on his highly specific chest gear and the accompanying weapon, he represents a late-war Assault Infantryman (Sturmmann or Grenadier) equipped with the revolutionary Sturmgewehr 44.
Uniform and Equipment Details
-
Headgear: The figure wears the standard German Stahlhelm (steel helmet) equipped with a printed camouflage helmet cover and a securely fastened chin strap.
-
Uniform and Insignia: He is dressed in a printed camouflage smock worn over a standard field-grey (Feldgrau) tunic. On his exposed collar, the right black tab clearly displays the printed SS runes (double lightning bolts), historically identifying him as a member of the Waffen-SS rather than the regular army (Wehrmacht). His lower legs feature printed canvas gaiters (Gamaschen) and low ankle boots, which became standard late-war issue to conserve precious leather.
-
Specialized Combat Gear: The most defining piece of his tactical gear is the set of chest pouches. Unlike standard Kar98k rifle pouches or long MP40 submachine gun pouches, these are historically accurate StG 44 Magazine Pouches. They were specifically tailored to hold the heavy, curved 30-round magazines of the new assault rifle, often featuring small side pockets for a magazine speed loader or cleaning kit, as detailed in the print.
-
The Weapon: The accessory pictured next to the figure is a highly detailed replica of the StG 44 (Sturmgewehr 44). It is easily identifiable by its distinctive curved 30-round magazine, brown wooden stock, brown pistol grip, and the raised front sight and gas tube above the barrel.
Historical Background
During the late stages of World War II, the Waffen-SS and the regular German Army were fighting desperate defensive battles on both the Eastern and Western fronts. To drastically increase the firepower of the individual infantryman, Germany developed and deployed the Sturmgewehr 44 (literally translated to “Assault Rifle 44”).
The StG 44 was a revolutionary firearm that forever changed infantry combat. It fired a new 7.92×33mm Kurz (short) intermediate cartridge. This brilliantly bridged the gap between a heavy, long-range bolt-action rifle and a short-range submachine gun. It allowed soldiers to fire accurately at medium ranges but could also be switched to fully automatic fire for devastating close-quarters combat. The StG 44 was the world’s first mass-produced assault rifle and heavily influenced modern firearm design (most famously inspiring the Soviet AK-47).
Furthermore, the specialized, reversible camouflage smocks and helmet covers worn by this figure were pioneered by the Waffen-SS to give their troops a vital concealment advantage in the forests and ruined cities of late-war Europe.
