Introduction
This picture displays two custom building block minifigures standing side-by-side. Both figures represent WWII German Volkssturm Militia Members, specifically depicting older civilian conscripts from the desperate final stages of the war.
Here is a detailed introduction to each character:
Left Figure: Volkssturm Member in Grey Overcoat
The figure on the left is dressed entirely in everyday civilian clothing, featuring a long dark grey overcoat worn over a tan checkered sweater vest, a collared shirt, and a dark tie. On his head, he wears a classic civilian dark grey fedora hat with a black band. His face print adds significant character, including a mustache and a prominent facial scar on his right cheek, suggesting a weary veteran or a civilian who has already endured the harsh realities of the war. His lower half consists of dark grey trousers and dark boots. Most importantly, his left arm bears a bright yellow armband, which is the crucial visual indicator of his militia status.
Right Figure: Volkssturm Member in Beige Overcoat
The figure on the right shares the exact same facial print as his companion, featuring the mustache and the facial scar, and he also wears an identical dark grey fedora hat. However, his civilian attire provides visual variety; he wears a dark beige or tan long overcoat over the same style of checkered sweater vest and tie. His trousers are brown with a printed pinstripe pattern, ending in dark brown boots. Just like the other figure, he wears the historically mandated yellow Volkssturm armband on his left sleeve to mark him as an active combatant.
Historical Background: The Volkssturm (People’s Storm)
The Volkssturm was a national militia established by Nazi Germany in late 1944 as a desperate, last-ditch measure to defend the home front against advancing Soviet and Allied armies. Because the regular Wehrmacht army had been severely depleted after years of conflict, the government forcibly conscripted civilian men between the ages of 16 and 60, pulling in the elderly, the young, and those previously deemed unfit for military service.
Due to extreme late-war material shortages and logistical collapses, these civilian soldiers were rarely issued standard military uniforms. Instead, they fought in exactly what they wore to work or on the streets—everyday civilian suits, winter overcoats, and fedoras, as perfectly captured by these minifigures. To legally distinguish them as lawful combatants under the international rules of war—and to prevent them from being summarily executed as illegal partisans upon capture—the state issued them the distinctive yellow “Deutscher Volkssturm Wehrmacht” armband. These poorly trained and vastly under-equipped civilian militias played a tragic and heavy role in the brutal, close-quarters street fighting during the Battle of Berlin in 1945.
