Introduction
This image displays a collection of four toy minifigures representing a squad from the German Afrikakorps (DAK), including their famous commander, from the North African Campaign of World War II.
The figure in the top left is a German Afrikakorps (DAK) NCO. He is dressed in the tan tropical uniform and a tan-green Stahlhelm (steel helmet). His tunic is highly detailed, showing the rank insignia of an NCO (Unteroffizier), the ribbon for the Iron Cross Second Class, and a Wound Badge, indicating he is a combat veteran. He is armed with the standard-issue Karabiner 98k (Kar98k) rifle, the primary weapon for most German infantry.
The figure in the top right is also a German Afrikakorps (DAK) NCO or squad leader. He wears the same decorated tan tropical uniform and Stahlhelm. His leadership role is defined by his weapon: the MP 40 (Maschinenpistole 40) submachine gun. This was the standard weapon for squad leaders, providing them with automatic fire for close-quarters assaults.
The figure in the bottom left is a German Afrikakorps (DAK) Machine Gunner. He is equipped for the harsh desert environment with a tan-green Stahlhelm, sand goggles, and a face wrap. He wears the tan tropical uniform with ammunition belts (bandoliers) draped over his shoulders. He is armed with the MG 42 machine gun, one of the most feared weapons of the war, nicknamed “Hitler’s Buzzsaw” for its incredible rate of fire.
The figure in the bottom right represents Generalfeldmarschall (Field Marshal) Erwin Rommel, the famous commander of the Afrikakorps, also known as the “Desert Fox.” He is depicted in a general’s tropical uniform, consisting of a white tunic, tan trousers, and a grey officer’s peaked visor cap with gold general’s piping. His identity is confirmed by his unique decorations: the Knight’s Cross at his neck and, just above it, the Pour le Mérite (or “Blue Max”), a high honor he won in World War I. He is also shown with a Luger P08 pistol.
