Character Identification: WWII Finnish Infantry – Suomi Submachine Gunner
This custom building block minifigure specifically represents a WWII Finnish Infantry Submachine Gunner, historically serving in the Finnish Army (Suomen maavoimat) during the Second World War. The highly specific tactical gear printed on his torso instantly identifies him as a soldier wielding the legendary Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun.
Uniform and Equipment Details
-
The M36 Field Uniform: The character is outfitted in the standard-issue grey military tunic and matching trousers, which historically represents the highly recognizable Finnish M36 field uniform (Kenttäpuku m/36).
-
Collar Tabs: The tunic features distinct green collar tabs with light grey border piping. In the Finnish Army, the green color historically denoted the infantry branch, marking him as a frontline combatant.
-
Suomi Drum Magazine Pouches: This is the most crucial defining feature of this specific figure. Hanging from the front of his brown leather belt are two large, printed circular canvas pouches. These were historically designed specifically to carry the massive, heavy 71-round drum magazines used for the Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun.
-
The Puukko Knife: Tucked behind his belt on the right side (just above the magazine pouch), you can see the printed handle of a Puukko. This is a traditional Finnish utility knife that almost every Finnish soldier carried. It was used for everything from cutting bread and carving wood to brutal close-quarters combat in the trenches.
-
Facial Print: The figure is shown without headgear, revealing a highly detailed, battle-weary face print featuring dirt/scuff marks and a small mustache, perfectly capturing the rugged appearance of a soldier fighting in the freezing, grueling conditions of the Eastern Front.
-
Footwear: The lower legs feature dark printing to represent standard black marching boots (jackboots).
Historical Background
During the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944), the heavily outnumbered Finnish Army relied on superior tactics, mobility, and firepower to hold off the Soviet Red Army.
The Suomi KP/-31 (Konepistooli m/31) was one of the most effective and beautifully engineered submachine guns of the entire war. Because fighting in the dense, freezing forests of Finland often resulted in sudden, extremely close-range ambushes (the famous Finnish motti tactics), soldiers equipped with the Suomi submachine gun provided devastating, rapid firepower. The weapon was so successful and lethal that it directly inspired the Soviet Union to develop their own drum-magazine submachine gun, the famous PPSh-41. A Finnish submachine gunner was a highly valued shock trooper, heavily burdened by the weight of his drum magazines but absolutely lethal in forest combat.
