Character Identification: WWII Finnish Infantry Soldier
This custom building block minifigure specifically represents a WWII Finnish Infantry Soldier (historically part of the Suomen maavoimat, the Finnish Army) during the harsh conflicts of the Second World War.
Uniform and Equipment Details
-
The M36 Field Uniform: The character is dressed in a highly detailed grey military tunic and matching trousers. This represents the iconic Finnish M36 field uniform (Kenttäpuku m/36), which was the standard-issue combat attire for the Finnish armed forces during the war, especially in non-winter conditions.
-
Headgear: Unlike the previous unhelmeted version, this figure is equipped with a dark grey/black steel helmet. Historically, the Finns used a wide variety of helmets, but this closely resembles the domestic Finnish m/40 helmet or the German Stahlhelm, both of which were heavily utilized by Finnish frontline troops. The printed brown leather chinstrap on the face perfectly aligns with the helmet.
-
Collar Tabs: The tunic features highly distinct dark green collar tabs with light grey/white trim. In the Finnish Army, these specific colored patches historically denoted the infantry branch, marking him as a frontline foot soldier.
-
Combat Webbing: The figure’s torso is intricately printed with field gear, featuring a brown leather waist belt with a silver rectangular buckle, supported by cross-body leather suspenders (Y-straps).
-
Ammunition Pouches: Attached to his belt are various printed pouches, most notably a large circular pouch on his right side and an olive-drab canvas utility pouch on his left hip. Turning to the back view, you can see the continuation of the leather harness and an additional small field accessory.
-
Footwear: His lower legs feature dark printing to represent standard black marching boots (jackboots), the typical footwear for infantrymen of that era.
Historical Background
During World War II, Finland fought two incredibly grueling conflicts primarily against the invading Soviet Union. The first was the famous Winter War (1939–1940), where a massively outnumbered Finnish army held off the Red Army using superior mobility, familiarity with the harsh terrain, and a legendary national concept of grit and determination known as Sisu.
Following a brief peace, Finland engaged in the Continuation War (1941–1944) to reclaim their lost territories. The Finnish infantryman was known to be an exceptionally tough, resourceful, and lethal fighter.
Because the Finnish military was heavily under-equipped, they became masters of utilizing captured enemy weapons. The Soviet DP-27 light machine gun (with its distinct large pan magazine) was captured in such massive quantities that it essentially became the standard light machine gun of the Finnish Army, affectionately nicknamed “Emma” by the troops. This minifigure perfectly represents the rugged infantryman who would have wielded such captured firepower.
