Historical Background
Baldur von Schirach (1907–1974) was a central figure in the indoctrination of German youth during the Third Reich. Joining the Nazi Party at a young age, he quickly rose through the ranks due to his unwavering loyalty to Adolf Hitler.
In 1931, Hitler appointed him as the head of the Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend or HJ), and in 1933, he was given the state title of Reich Youth Leader (Reichsjugendführer). In this role, Schirach was responsible for forcibly absorbing or banning all other German youth organizations (such as the Boy Scouts and religious youth groups) and transforming the Hitler Youth into a massive, mandatory state apparatus. His primary objective was to utterly brainwash millions of German children with Nazi ideology, militarism, and extreme antisemitism, preparing the boys to be fanatic soldiers and the girls to be compliant mothers for the state.
In 1940, Schirach stepped down as the head of the Hitler Youth and was appointed as the Gauleiter (Regional Party Leader) and Reichsstatthalter (Reich Governor) of Vienna. In Vienna, he oversaw the brutal deportation of tens of thousands of Austrian Jews to extermination camps in the East.
After the war, Baldur von Schirach was captured by the Allies and stood trial at the Nuremberg Trials. He was found guilty of crimes against humanity for his role in the deportation of the Viennese Jews and was sentenced to 20 years in Spandau Prison. He served his full sentence and was released in 1966.
