This is a custom-made accessory for a toy, representing a Soviet-style multi-port muzzle brake from a World War II era tank or anti-tank gun.
This type of muzzle brake is visually distinct from the large baffle-style brakes used by the Germans. It features a more cylindrical shape with several smaller, rectangular ports or slots machined into its sides. Its function was the same: to reduce the cannon’s recoil by venting a portion of the escaping propellant gases out to the sides. This design is often informally referred to as a “pepperbox” or “salt shaker” style muzzle brake.
This design was a common feature on many successful and widely produced Soviet cannons of World War II. It was notably used on the powerful 57mm ZiS-2 anti-tank gun, the ubiquitous 76mm ZiS-3 divisional gun, and the main armament of the SU-76 self-propelled gun. Seeing this type of muzzle brake on the battlefield was a clear indicator of the presence of potent Soviet artillery or anti-tank assets.
