This is a custom-made accessory for a toy diorama, designed to represent a Soviet Red Army military road signpost from the World War II era.
The signpost is a collection of various directional and informational signs written in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, which would have been used to direct soldiers and vehicles on the Eastern Front. The signs are attached to a single post, typical of a field-expedient military marker.
The individual signs from top to bottom are:
- A sign for a military parking area, indicated by the “P” symbol and the Red Army star.
- “ВОДА” (Voda): An arrow pointing to a “WATER” supply point.
- “УБЕЖИЩЕ” (Ubezhishche): An arrow pointing to a “SHELTER,” such as a bunker or dugout.
- “ПЛОЩАДКА ДЛЯ ПОСАДКИ РАНЕНЫХ” (Ploshchadka dlya posadki ranenykh): A large medical sign for an “AREA FOR LOADING THE WOUNDED,” indicating a casualty collection point.
- An arrow with a red cross, pointing the direction to a medical aid station.
Historical Background: This signpost provides a snapshot of a logistical hub for the Soviet Red Army during World War II. It points to all the essential locations necessary to support frontline troops: a place to park vehicles, a source of fresh water, a shelter from artillery or air attack, and, critically, the locations for medical treatment. Signage like this was vital for maintaining order and directing the immense flow of men and material during the massive operations on the Eastern Front.
