Like other Soviet greatcoats, or Shinel, of the period, this garment is depicted as a heavy, brownish-grey woolen coat with a printed brown belt, designed for warmth and durability. What specifically identifies this piece is the color of its collar insignia. The coat features prominent, bright green collar tabs (petlitsy), which was the designated branch color for the NKVD Border Troops. These troops were the militarized border guard of the Soviet Union. Although part of the NKVD (the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs), they were well-trained, disciplined soldiers who famously served as the first line of defense, bearing the initial shock of the German invasion in June 1941.
