This is a custom-made accessory for a toy, representing a German single-baffle muzzle brake from a World War II era tank cannon.
This device was fitted to the end of the barrel of many early-to-mid-war German armored vehicles. Like all muzzle brakes, its purpose was to reduce the gun’s recoil by redirecting some of the propellant gases sideways through the large openings.
This specific rounded, single-baffle design is characteristic of the lower-velocity, short-barreled cannons that were primarily intended for infantry support rather than high-velocity anti-tank combat. It is most famously associated with the 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 gun, which was the main armament of the early models of the Panzer IV tank (Ausf. A through F1) and the Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) assault gun (Ausf. A through E). The simple but effective design was sufficient for the recoil produced by these “stubby” cannons.
