This is a custom-made accessory for a toy minifigure, designed to represent a classic German “Jerrycan” fuel can from the World War II era.
The accessory accurately replicates the iconic design of the original German fuel can, officially known as the Wehrmacht-Einheitskanister. It is colored dark green, a common camouflage color for German military equipment in the European theater of operations. Key design features include the recessed X-shaped reinforcing ribs and the famous three-handle design. It is printed with the German words “Kraftstoff 20L,” which translates to “Fuel 20 Liters.” The white cross marking was also a common German marking, though historically it was typically used to designate cans that carried water, not fuel.
Historical Background: The “Jerrycan” was a revolutionary German invention from the 1930s and is considered one of the most successful pieces of equipment design. Its three handles allowed it to be carried easily by one person (center handle) or by two people (outer handles). The design of the spout allowed for fast, smooth pouring without a funnel, and its construction was exceptionally durable. The Allies, who were using inferior cans, quickly copied the superior German design after capturing them. “Jerry” was Allied slang for a German, hence the nickname “Jerrycan.” The design remains the standard for portable fuel containers to this day.
