This is a custom-made accessory for a toy minifigure, designed to represent a classic German “Jerrycan” fuel can from the World War II era.
The accessory accurately replicates the iconic design of the original German fuel can, officially known as the Wehrmacht-Einheitskanister. It has a rectangular shape with recessed reinforcing ribs, a spout in the corner, and its famous three-handle design. The can is black and is printed with the German words “Kraftstoff 20L,” which translates to “Fuel 20 Liters.” The white cross marking was also a common German marking, though historically it was typically used to designate cans that carried water, not fuel.
Historical Background: The “Jerrycan” was a revolutionary German invention from the 1930s and is considered one of the most successful pieces of military equipment design. Its three handles allowed it to be carried by one person using the center handle, or by two people using the outer handles. The design of the spout allowed for fast, smooth pouring without a funnel. The Allies, who were using flimsy, leak-prone cans at the start of the war, quickly recognized the superiority of the German design upon capturing them. “Jerry” was Allied slang for a German, so they nicknamed the captured containers “Jerrycans.” The design was so effective that it was copied by the Allies and remains the standard for portable fuel and liquid containers to this day.
