This is a custom-made accessory for a toy minifigure, designed to represent a camouflaged German “Jerrycan” fuel can from the North African Campaign of World War II.
The accessory replicates the iconic design of the German Wehrmacht-Einheitskanister, featuring its famous three-handle top, recessed reinforcing ribs, and a corner spout. It is printed with the German words “Kraftstoff 20L,” which translates to “Fuel 20 Liters.”
What makes this piece distinct is its two-tone desert camouflage pattern. It has a light sand-colored base with irregular splotches of a red-brown or orange color. This type of disruptive camouflage was applied to vehicles and equipment by the German Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK) to help them blend into the varied terrain of the North African desert, which included rocky and reddish-hued landscapes as well as yellow sand. The white cross marking, though typically used to designate cans for water, is also present.
Historical Background: The German-designed “Jerrycan” was a crucial piece of equipment in the highly mobile desert warfare of North Africa, where fuel and water were vital. While many cans were painted a solid sand color, applying a two-tone camouflage pattern like this would have offered superior concealment for cans stowed on the outside of a tank or truck against the diverse desert backdrops.
