This is a custom-made accessory for a toy diorama, designed to represent an Allied military road signpost from the European Theater of World War II (circa 1944).
The signpost is a collection of various traffic control and directional signs that would have been used by Allied forces to manage the movement of troops and vehicles after landing in France. The signs are all in English.
The individual signs from top to bottom are:
- “NO RIGHT TURN”: A standard military police traffic control sign.
- “CARENTAN 5 MILES”: A directional sign pointing to the town of Carentan. It includes the helmet-and-spade insignia of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles.”
- “+ Red Devils”: A sign pointing to a medical aid station (+) for the “Red Devils,” the famous nickname of the British 1st Airborne Division.
- “SLOW 5 MPH”: A traffic control sign ordering vehicles to reduce speed.
- A directional arrow, likely part of a route marking system.
Historical Background: This single signpost is rich with the history of the Allied campaign in Northwest Europe in 1944. The sign for Carentan directly references a key battle in Normandy, fought and won by the U.S. 101st Airborne Division just after the D-Day landings. The sign for the “Red Devils” evokes the heroic but tragic stand of the British 1st Airborne Division at the Battle of Arnhem during Operation Market Garden. This accessory represents the paths of two of the most famous Allied airborne units of the war.
