This image displays a collection of custom-made accessories for a toy diorama, representing Allied military warning and directional signs from the European Theater of World War II, particularly those associated with minefields.
Minefield Warning Signpost
This signpost features several signs, the most prominent of which is the large, hand-written style warning: “DAWGER IF YOU WANT TO LIVE STOP.” This is a toy replica of a famous, historically accurate sign (with the intentional misspelling of “DANGER”) that was created by Allied combat engineers, particularly after the D-Day landings in Normandy. These grimly humorous and direct signs were used to warn fellow soldiers of heavily mined German defensive positions. The other signs on the post are a military route marker and a directional arrow for a “BRIDGE.”
“SAFE LANE” Sign
This is a square white sign with a black border and red text that reads “SAFE LANE.” This sign was the vital counterpart to the minefield warnings. After combat engineers had carefully cleared a narrow path through a dangerous minefield, they would place these signs to mark the exact corridor that was safe for troops and vehicles to follow.
“PRIMER” Sign
This is a simple white sign with the word “PRIMER” in red. This is a technical warning sign used by engineers. A primer is the sensitive explosive component that initiates the main charge in a landmine or booby trap. This sign would be used to mark a location where primers were stored or to warn of a specific primed explosive hazard, intended to be understood by trained personnel.
