He is most famous for his skill as a commander of the Tiger I tank. His most renowned military feat occurred during the Battle of Villers-Bocage in Normandy (June 1944), where he single-handedly ambushed a British convoy, destroying over a dozen tanks and numerous other vehicles in a short period. He was credited with the destruction of approximately 138 enemy tanks and 132 anti-tank guns before he was killed in action in August 1944.
