Introduction

This image displays a collection of six toy minifigures representing various soldiers from the Vietnam War era, including both American and North Vietnamese forces.

The figure in the top left is a U.S. Special Forces Operator. He is depicted in “Tiger Stripe” camouflage, a pattern that was not standard issue but was widely procured by elite units like the Green Berets and MACV-SOG for its superior concealment in the jungle. He wears a matching “Tiger Stripe” boonie hat and has camouflage face paint, and is equipped with M1956-style webbing.

The figure in the top center is also a U.S. Special Forces Operator in “Tiger Stripe” camouflage. Like the first figure, he wears the boonie hat and camouflage face paint, but his printed equipment includes a bandolier, suggesting a role as a grenadier or a soldier carrying extra ammunition. This look is also characteristic of elite, deep-reconnaissance units.

The figure in the top right is a U.S. Army “Grunt” (Machine Gunner). He wears an M1 Helmet with the standard “Mitchell” camouflage cover and an olive-green uniform with rolled-up sleeves. His role is clearly identified by the two crisscrossed bandoliers of 7.62mm ammunition worn over his webbing, which was the standard way an M60 machine gunner (nicknamed “The Pig”) would carry his ready ammo.

The figure in the bottom left is a standard U.S. Army “Grunt” (Rifleman). He wears the M1 Helmet with the “Mitchell” camouflage cover and is dressed in olive-green jungle fatigues. He is equipped with the M1956 load-bearing harness (webbing) and has dog tags printed around his neck. This figure is the quintessential representation of a U.S. infantryman in Vietnam.

The figure in the bottom center is a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) Infantryman. He is dressed in the standard olive-green NVA uniform and wears the iconic pith helmet (mũ cối) with a red star emblem. He is also wearing a blue and white checkered scarf (khăn rằn). His equipment is the canvas “Chicom” chest rig, which was the standard way NVA and Viet Cong soldiers carried ammunition for their AK-47 or Type 56 rifles.

The figure in the bottom right is also a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) Infantryman. He wears the olive-green uniform, the “Chicom” chest rig, and the pith helmet (this one featuring the PAVN wreath emblem). His scarred and stubbled face gives him the appearance of a veteran soldier of the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN), the main conventional force that fought the U.S. and South Vietnamese.
