Introduction
This image displays two toy minifigures representing high-ranking officers from two different German foreign volunteer legions during World War II.
The figure on the left is General Andrey Vlasov, the commander of the Russian Liberation Army (ROA). He is depicted in a German Army general’s uniform, complete with a general’s peaked visor cap with gold piping, and glasses. His specific affiliation is shown by the distinctive blue and white ROA sleeve shield on his arm. Historical Background: Vlasov was a highly decorated Soviet general who, after his capture by the Germans, agreed to lead a collaborationist army of Soviet prisoners of war against Stalin’s Red Army.
The figure on the right is an SS-Obersturmführer (Lieutenant) from the 29th Waffen-SS Italian Legion (Legione SS Italiana). He is wearing a field grey SS officer’s uniform with a matching peaked cap featuring the Totenkopf (death’s head) insignia. His identity is confirmed by the Italian fasces arm shield and the division’s unique red collar tabs, which were worn in place of the standard black SS tabs. Historical Background: This unit was formed from Italian fascist volunteers who chose to continue fighting for the Axis after Italy’s surrender to the Allies in 1943.
