Introduction
This image displays a large and diverse collection of custom-made accessories for toy dioramas, representing various military road signposts from different fronts of World War II, including both Allied and Axis forces.
Allied Minefield Warning Signpost (Normandy)
This signpost (far left) represents the grim, unofficial warnings placed by Allied combat engineers in Normandy after D-Day. The main sign, “DAWGER IF YOU WANT TO LIVE STOP” (a historically accurate misspelling of “DANGER”), warns of German minefields. The accompanying separate sign, “SAFE LANE,” would be used to mark a cleared path through the danger.
Soviet Red Army Signpost (Eastern Front)
This signpost (on a fuel drum, left of center) features signs in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, typical of the Eastern Front. The signs point to vital logistical locations for the Red Army: “ВОДА” (Water), “УБЕЖИЩЕ” (Shelter), and a large medical sign for an “AREA FOR LOADING THE WOUNDED,” showcasing the support network behind the Soviet lines.
German Afrikakorps Airfield Sign (North Africa)
This large signpost (center, on two drums) is from the North African Campaign. The main blue sign points to the key strategic locations of “TOBRUK,” a vital port city, and “ELADEM,” a critical airfield. Other German signs point to a “ROLL-BAHN” (Runway) and an “Armee-Machtr Park.I” (Army Motor Vehicle Park), representing a major logistical hub for the DAK. The posts are based on fuel drums marked “Kein Feuerwerk” (No Open Flames).
German Offensive Signpost (Battle of the Bulge)
This tall brown signpost (center) represents the German logistical effort during the Battle of the Bulge. It features a warning sign for the “Reichsgrenze” (Reich Border), a traffic command to “Langsam fahren!” (Drive Slowly!), and abbreviations pointing to an ammunition depot (H.M.L.), an Organisation Todt engineering site (OT), and an Army Motor Vehicle Park (A.K.P.).
Allied Airborne Signpost (Northwest Europe)
This grey signpost (right of center) is themed around elite Allied airborne units. One sign points to “CARENTAN” and features the spade insignia of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division. Another points to a medical station for the “Red Devils,” the nickname for the British 1st Airborne Division, famous for their role at Arnhem.
British Commonwealth Signpost (North Africa)
This grey signpost (far right) represents the logistical signs used by the British 8th Army in the desert. The most important sign points to a “WATER POINT,” the most precious resource in the North African Campaign. Other signs direct traffic to a supply “DUMP” and a medical station. The separate yellow sign is a bridge classification marker, indicating its weight limit for vehicles.
German Checkpoint Signpost (Italian Campaign)
This signpost (partially visible, far right) is from the Italian Campaign. It has a mix of German and Italian signs, such as a large traffic command sign reading “!Halt! für alle Kraftfahrzeuge” (Stop! for all motor vehicles), indicating a checkpoint, and an Italian sign for “Deviazione” (Detour).
