This image displays a toy minifigure representing Eduard Dietl, a highly decorated German Generaloberst (Colonel General) who was a famous commander of mountain troops during World War II.

The figure is depicted in the field grey (Feldgrau) uniform of a German Army General. His rank is clearly indicated by the specific insignia he wears. His collar tabs (Kragenspiegel) are bright red, the color of the General Staff, and feature the unique golden arabesque embroidery (Arabesken) reserved for general officers. His shoulder boards would also denote his high rank.

Two key features identify him specifically as Eduard Dietl and a commander of the elite mountain troops:

  • Gebirgsjäger Insignia: On his right sleeve is the Edelweiss flower patch, the cherished and iconic symbol of the German Gebirgsjäger (Mountain Troops).
  • Decorations: He is shown with some of his highest awards, including the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross worn at his neck and the German Cross in Gold on his right breast pocket.

Historical Background: Eduard Dietl (1890-1944) was one of Germany’s most popular and competent generals during World War II. He rose to fame as the commander of the 3rd Mountain Division during the German invasion of Norway in 1940. His tenacious and successful leadership in the brutal fighting around the port of Narvik earned him the nickname “The Hero of Narvik” and made him the first German soldier to be awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight’s Cross. He later commanded the 20th Mountain Army, fighting against the Soviet Union in the harsh arctic conditions of northern Finland and Norway. Dietl was killed in a plane crash in June 1944.
